It’s Okay if You Can’t Keep Your Pet
I was compelled to talk about this as I’ve seen a lot of post for rehoming or accidental dog pregnancies, and the public shaming that comes with it.
I have taken my animals everywhere with me. Even when I was escaping a dangerous and violent situation years ago, my pets came with. I was lucky to be able to do that and I risked further violence to take them with me. That was MY choice. People are so reluctant to leave their pets that women will stay in domestic abuse situations far longer than others without pets for fear of leaving them and not being able to find a place that accepts them. After I found safety is when I put myself in school and followed the path of public service to become a first responder and there’s some things I’ve learned (ok, MANY things I’ve learned) that really changed my perspective about so many things. Pet ownership is one of them.
We all love our pets, but life can sometimes throw unexpected challenges our way. We all acknowledge that owning a pet comes with responsibilities, and it’s okay to seek help or rehome them if you find yourself unable to provide the care they need.
I have learned to accept these situations with empathy and understanding.
Pet care, including food, veterinary visits, and unexpected medical expenses, can be costly. It’s a significant commitment that not everyone can foresee. Asking for help or finding a new home for your pet is a responsible choice, ensuring they receive the care they deserve.
Life is unpredictable. Job loss, health issues, or other unexpected events can make it challenging to care for a pet. Seeking assistance or rehoming your pet temporarily or permanently can provide them with stability and well-being.
Keeping a pet out of guilt, despite not being able to meet their needs, is detrimental to both you and the pet. Acknowledging the situation and finding a suitable solution shows maturity and concern for the animal’s welfare.
Fostering animals temporarily to keep them out of shelters is a noble act. It provides them with a safe environment while waiting for a forever home. Rehoming pets through responsible channels ensures they find loving families where they can thrive.
We need to break the stigma around asking for help or admitting that we can’t meet our pet’s needs.
Being honest about your situation and prioritizing the well-being of your pet is an act of love and responsibility.
Let’s create a supportive community where people feel comfortable asking for help, ensuring that every pet can lead a happy and healthy life.
